Brewers top Bighorns 12-4 in Final Preseason Match

LONGMONT, CO (November 28, 2014) Avery Brewing FC wrapped up an undefeated preseason defeating the Rocky Mountain Bighorns 12-4 on Friday night at Longmont Indoor Soccer.

The game started off fast as Sterling Copeland scored 30 seconds into the match on an assist from Angelo Rieder.  After a Justin Geibel goal, Martin Orona scored a first-time shot off of a corner kick from Dan Campbell.  Shane Wheeler closed out the scoring in the first quarter with a power play goal off a pass from Kevin Haber to give Avery a 4-0 lead.

Team Captain Dan Campbell scored the goal of the night in the second quarter as he hammered a vicious half-volley into the upper 90.  Corey Cullen laid off a nice pass on a 3-on-2 breakaway to Justin Geibel for his second of the night shortly thereafter.  Goalkeeper Zac Gibbens started a counter-attack with a laser off the boards, which Sterling Copelaand laid across the face of the goal for an Ian Marcheschi tap-in to make it 7-0.  After The Bighorns scored their first goal, Kevin Haber put a left-footed shot into the upper corner to make it 8-1 at the half.

The Brewers gave up a goal to start the second half, however Dan Campbell answered with his second goal of the night.  After a turnover Shane Wheeler and Corey Cullen exchanged two give-and-go's and Shane finished into an open net.  Sterling Copeland got his second goal of the night after an assist from Dan Campbell, a first-time finish off the board at the near post.  Avery Brewing FC scored their 12th and final goal on an own goal, Shane Wheelers pressure resulting in the mistake.

Goalkeepers Zac Gibbens and Alex Seeley combined for the win.  Zac played 3 quarters and made 13 saves while allowing 3 goals.  Rookie goalkeeper Alex Seeley made his Avery Brewing FC debut by making 6 saves in the 4th quarter while allowing 1 goal.

Eleven of the Brewers sixteen players recorded points. Dan Campbell (2G, 2A), Sterling Copeland (2G, 2A), and Shane Wheeler (2G, 2A) led the attack with 4 points each. Justin Geibel recorded 2 goals while Angelo Rider and Corey Cullen added 2 assists a piece.  Defender Kevin Haber scored a goal and supplied an assist.  Recording 1 point each were Martin Orona (1G), Ian Marcheschi (1G), Ben Donovan (1A), and Temo Gonzalez (1A).

Avery Brewing FC opens the regular season with a double-header next weekend.  Friday December 5th they square off against Real Colorado Edge @ 8:00 PM (TICKETS AVAILABLE HERE) and will travel to Colorado Springs on Saturday December 6th to face the Rocky Mountain Bighorns.

Meet the team - Shane Wheeler

Next up in "Meet the Team" is our top striker Shane Wheeler. He's a true #9 and has won the Golden Boot every season since joining us in 2012. He's a local lad from Louisville/Monarch HS, grew up playing for FC Boulder (formerly BC Force) and has been a PASL Rocky Mountain Division All-Star with FC Denver in 2012 and Oskar Blues FC in 2013. "Shaner" is a real handful for any defense and we're expecting many more goals and assists this winter. Here's to his continued growth and success on and off the field as he's one of the most genuine and hard-working guys you'll ever meet...and we love him for it. "To be the man, you gotta beat the man, woo!" - Ric Flair

Meet the Team - Dan Campbell

Dan Campbell - Club Captain. Campbell aka DC had a stellar youth career in Northern CA and played D1 college ball at UC-Davis. He graduated with his MBA from CU-Boulder where he won the NIRSA Men's Club Soccer National Title, has won numerous trophies with Harpo's FC and captained our OBFC PASL team last year. He truly leads by example and we're all better people and players because of him. Congratulations on your recent marriage brotha

Meet the Team - Ben Donovan

Next up in Meet the Team is Ben Benjamin aka Ben Donovan. Simply put, he's a winner. "Donny" is another local lad, who was all-state at Alexander Dawson School, played for perennial D3 National Champions Ohio Wesleyan and graduated from D2 Eckerd College in Florida. Since 2012, he's won numerous outdoor titles with Harpo's FC. He's also created, managed and led his own successful indoor championship team Das Haus while earning PASL RMD All-Star status with FC Denver in 2013 and Oskar Blues FC in 2014. He's got everything in his locker - big, strong, tough, quick feet, vision, heart, endless engine and desire to be the best in every single training, game and tournament. Ben epitomizes what it means to be a champion on and off the field. He hasn't peaked yet and we look forward to him totally dominating midfield going into his prime. He's a man for all seasons and a big game player, in short, a real baller. Keep up the momentum bro
